I’m pretty certain that people don’t think that it is much fun being in a nursing home but I can tell you my experience was exactly that. I am 91 years old and I spent a few weeks there between being in the hospital and going home because I needed rehabilitation because I was at risk of falling.
When I arrived at Collingswood I was sort of downcast in my attitude. I just wanted to spend time in bed and go right back there after my therapy. The staff spent time learning about the things I have always been interested in and started encouraging me to ‘get up and get going’ because I was missing out on some things that sounded just like me.
Well they were right. I always loved to travel and one of the first things I started going to was their ‘armchair’ travel programs. My son got a kick out of the things I was going to and he began to tag along and go with me if he was visiting. I even tried out some new crafts and learned that I have a knack at some of them.
I’m heading now to an assisted living facility. I hope things there are as enjoyable as they were at Collingswood!
